The EU agreed to buy US$750 billion worth of U.S. energy and invest an additional US$600 billion in military equipment.

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States and the European Union have reached a tariff agreement that includes a 15% duty on European products, as well as EU purchases of American energy and military equipment.

Under the deal, the EU has agreed to buy US$750 billion worth of U.S. energy and invest an additional US$600 billion in American military equipment.

Washington will impose a flat 15% tariff on EU imports, including automobiles, instead of the 30% it had threatened to implement starting in August if no deal had been reached.

European countries also reportedly agreed to apply zero tariffs on U.S. imports, although the U.S. president did not provide further details. Pharmaceutical products are excluded from the negotiations, Trump said at the end of his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“I think we both wanted to reach a deal,” Trump said after shaking hands with von der Leyen, whom he hosted at his Turnberry golf resort in western Scotland.

“This negotiation began months ago, so we knew what we were getting into,” he said, adding that both sides aimed to “reach an agreement that would satisfy both parties.”

“It’s going to be very good for everyone,” Trump declared, reiterating that the agreement with the EU, which has a market of 800 million consumers, is “the biggest of all.”

After the deal was concluded, the EU delegation headed to the airport, where von der Leyen was expected to make a statement. Trump welcomed von der Leyen as part of a four-day personal trip to Scotland, which will end Tuesday with a visit to his other golf course near Aberdeen in northeastern Scotland.

On Monday, the U.S. president is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss the bilateral tariff agreement, as well as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
